Burn Back Better

As the dust settles (and the SoilTac gets sprayed) in Lahaina, the situation continues to remain dire for those that were affected by the fires that consumed the town on August 8, 2023.

We want to encourage you to watch this entire interview with Shelby Hosana, Founder of Unjected.com and co-author of the new book “Burn Back Better: Lahaina - A Perfect Storm Or A Perfect Crime?, which is a comprehensive, in-depth analysis of all of the information that has been gathered about the fire up to this point, including what led up to the tragedy, the events on the day-of, exclusive testimony from survivors, hundreds of photos, documents, citation and so much more.

Here are some of the most recent developments over the last several weeks that are most troubling:

  • As expected, many home insurance claims are being denied. According to Hawaii News Now: “In another emerging barrier to recovery in Lahaina, many homeowners are discovering they don’t have enough insurance coverage to rebuild.” As if it wasn’t enough torment for the people of Lahaina and surrounding areas to deal with the tragedy at hand, the ability to rebuild what was taken from them has been taken as well.

  • Hawaii News Now also reports that a $150 Million dollar fund has been raised from several stakeholders, offering $1 Million to victim’s families who perished from the fire. However, there is catch: anyone accepting the money would waive the right to sue any of the people who donated to the fund. In the face of mounting public discontent, many outlets such as the State of Hawaii, Maui County, local school districts and Hawaii Electric Company are clearly concerned that serious repercussions are coming in light of their malfeasance and mishandling of the situation.

  • NBC News reports that Maui is experiencing a mental health crisis, as many residents are resorting to suicide in the face of a desperate situation. Many are having trouble coping with the trauma that they experienced during the event or the repeated trauma since August 8th. In the interview with TLAV, Shelby mentions cases of people jumping to their deaths off of the roofs of hotels.

  • SoilTac is being deployed in Lahaina. SoilTac is a soil stabilizer that was developed by the US military to absorb and eliminate radiated munitions in Afghanistan. Check out TLAV’s extensive coverage on the SoilTac issue. It is not suitable for application near bodies of water and its use in this case is extremely alarming for many of the local residents.

  • The official death count still remains at 97, despite the fact that there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that the death count is much much higher, potentially in the 1000’s. One of Shelby’s friends alone claims to have pulled approximately 100 bodies out of the water himself in the days after the fire, before relief showed up.

All in all, this tragedy is still unfolding. While the powers that shouldn’t be are in full-blown cover-up mode, many people like Shelby are out there trying to make sure that this story doesn’t fade away and that justice is eventually served.
