I think you're missing the point on Trump's comments re 'Americans' finances.' The comment was meant to be heard by Iran.
I'm no Trump fan. I'm against this war and think it was stupid to start it. But, if your comments are going to be broadcast back to Iran, which believes (rightly) that it can wait the US out in this war, then you want to tell them that the finances of common folk are not an issue for you.
Is Trump lying? Of course. Do I think Iran will believe it? No. But, his response was intended for that audience, and it's about the only response he could give.
Rather than criticizing Trump's lie, I'd point out that a member of the press finally asked a good question -- truly a rare occurrence these days.
